The term ‘woodworm’ actually covers a wide range of crawling insects, including the common furniture beetle and the ominously named death watch beetle. What most people associate the word with is damage to areas like wooden beams, flooring and supports. The problem is entirely caused by the larvae of beetles, burrowing into soft wood while they grow to maturity. Usually the first thing someone will notice with woodworm is when a floorboard breaks under foot. There are several tell-tale signs, however, that you can easily look out for.

SPOTTING A WOODWORM PROBLEM

The earlier you spot woodworm, the easier it is to deal with. If you look areas such as flooring and find small holes dotted about the timber, these could be the exit holes of larvae. You can also often see bored tunnels in wood that’s been cut and there may even be sawdust you can spot on or around the wood. Of course, one of the obvious sign is the weakness of the wood which can snap when you step on it. In the more advanced stages of an infestation, the wood can actually crumble easily under pressure from your fingers. The presence of live beetles and dead ones can also be a sign that woodworm is beginning to get a grip on your property. Eggs and larvae are more difficult to spot because they generally burrow into the wood but they can sometimes be seen.

DEALING WITH WOODWORM

Prevention is just as important as cure in this case. Beetles are much likelier to gravitate towards damp areas so making sure you remove at least some humidity from your home is important. This is often the case for floorboards that are open to the ground below. Ventilation and better heating all make a difference. Once you notice a woodworm problem, there are numerous products on the market that you can use to treat the wood. It’s far better, however, to get a professional in, not only to treat the damage but to also assess how far it has gone. Woodworm can take years to become a problem for your home or business and it’s worth investing a bit more to get everything resolved completely. DIY solutions simply can’t guarantee that the problem has been totally solved and they are often not administered properly in the first place.
